Punakha Dzong

Bhutan's most beautiful fortress sits where the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers meet. Visit in the soft light of late afternoon, and take your time. The courtyards, not just the outside walls, are what make it special.

Walks in the valley

The suspension bridge and the walk up to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten are both easy half-day trips. They're best in the morning, before the heat settles into the valley.

Eating well

Punakha grows Bhutan's famous red rice. A farmhouse lunch of red rice, ema datshi, and fresh greens, eaten right where it's cooked, is the best meal in the valley. It also puts money straight into the hands of the families who host you.
